What Are Dental Crowns?

A dental crown is a custom-made cap that fits over your entire tooth. Crowns restore the strength and function of a tooth that has been too badly damaged or decayed to repair with a filling alone. They also protect teeth that have undergone root canal treatment, and serve as the visible restoration placed on top of a dental implant.

What to Expect Over Two Visits

Crowns and bridges at Madison Dental Spa are completed in two appointments. At your first visit, Dr. Chason prepares the tooth by removing a small amount of enamel so the crown fits snugly, takes a precise impression, and places a temporary crown or bridge while your custom restoration is being made. When you return for your second visit, Dr. Chason places the permanent crown or bridge and makes any final adjustments for fit and comfort.

After placement, crowns and bridges are cared for just like natural teeth. Brush and floss daily and keep up with your routine preventive visits every six months to protect your restoration long-term.

Same-Day Crowns vs. Custom Crowns

Some practices offer same-day CEREC crowns milled chairside. Madison Dental Spa takes a different approach, sending impressions to a dental lab for a custom-crafted restoration. The two-visit process allows for a higher level of precision in fit, shade, and function than chairside milling typically delivers.
