Extractions Q&A

What are tooth extractions?

Tooth extraction is a simple surgical procedure to remove a diseased or decayed tooth to prevent infection and other health complications.

You may need a tooth extract if you have:

  • Crowded teeth
  • Advanced gum disease
  • Severe tooth decay or infection

Tooth extractions may be necessary if your wisdom teeth, your last four permanent molars at the back of the mouth, aren’t erupting properly.

If you’re getting dental implants, you may need to have multiple teeth extracted at the same time. Dr. Chason designs a custom treatment plan that outlines how many visits you need to complete extractions as you prepare for implants.

What can I expect during a tooth extraction?

Dr. Chason offers convenient, in-office extraction services. He provides several sedation methods, including anti-anxiety medications or nitrous oxide, to keep you comfortable.

Prior to the extraction, Dr. Chason uses a local anesthetic to numb the extraction site. As he extracts the tooth, you may feel some pressure but no pain. In many cases, an extraction only takes a few minutes.

Once your tooth is out, it’s normal to experience light bleeding. Dr. Chason places clean gauze in the gum to control bleeding and provides complete aftercare instructions to prevent infection.

You can go home to rest after your extraction. Although, a friend or family member will need to drive you home from the office if you had any sedation during the procedure.

How do I care for the extraction site?

It’s important to avoid smoking after your extraction, and you may need to limit your diet for the first 24 hours to let your gums heal properly. Soft foods or liquids are a good choice in the hours after your extraction.

To speed up the healing process, Dr. Chason may recommend avoiding the area when brushing your teeth for a day or two and using salt water rinses. For any discomfort, you can take over-the-counter pain relievers.

In some cases, you may need to take a course of antibiotics to clear up any remaining infection.
